Waker is an alarm app that verifies your morning mission with your iPhone's camera. It is built to know as little about you as possible.

The short version

Your camera data never leaves your iPhone. Missions are checked on your device by Apple's Vision framework. Frames are analyzed in memory and then discarded; no photo, video, or depth data is ever recorded, stored, or uploaded.
No accounts and no Waker server. There is nothing to sign up for.
Alarms and missions work offline. Waker uses the internet only for subscriptions, through our subscription provider Superwall and Apple's App Store, and, if you agree on the first setup screen, for setup statistics while you go through setup (PostHog).
No advertising and no tracking. No ads, no advertising identifier, no cross-app tracking, and no data sales. Waker never asks for tracking permission.

Data that stays on your iPhone

Apart from the subscription data and the setup statistics described below, everything Waker knows about you stays on your iPhone:

camera frames, which are analyzed in memory and then discarded;
alarm settings, including wake-up times and the objects you pick for the object mission;
mission history, results, and progress statistics;
your setup answers, such as your sleep habits (if you share setup statistics, only a code for each option you pick goes to PostHog, described below);
sounds you import and preferences such as your language.

The signature you draw during setup is only shown on screen and is never stored. Data on your iPhone can also be part of your device backups, which Apple encrypts according to your iCloud settings. Deleting the app deletes its data from your iPhone.

Data sent to Superwall for subscriptions

Superwall, Inc. (USA) runs our subscription screens and purchase handling as our service provider (processor). Waker contacts Superwall only for subscription features, for example when it shows a subscription screen or when you buy or restore a subscription. Superwall then receives:

Your first name, if you entered one during setup. It is optional; you can skip it.
The morning goal, morning activity, and mission type you selected during setup. They personalize the subscription screen and the follow-up offer shown if you cancel a purchase. Superwall stores them as user attributes.
Identifiers: a random user ID created by Superwall and Apple's identifier for vendor (IDFV).
Device and app information, such as device model, iOS version, app version, language, region and locale, time zone, screen and text-size settings, network type, and the IP address that every internet request reveals. Superwall also estimates your approximate location (city, region and country) from the IP address and stores it with this information.
Subscription activity: how you use subscription screens (for example views, purchase starts, cancellations and completions, and restores), basic app-session events such as app opens while the subscription service is running, and your subscription status and purchase history.

We use this data to show and personalize subscription offers, process and restore purchases, keep your access in sync, and measure which subscription screens work. Superwall's install-attribution matching, which links app installs to ads, is switched off in Waker.

We never send Superwall your camera images, video, depth, or movement data, your signature, your sleep-habit answers, your wake-up times, or your mission results. See Superwall's privacy policy (superwall.com/privacy).

Setup statistics (PostHog)

The first setup screen says: "By continuing, you share setup statistics, never your name." If you continue, Waker sends pseudonymous usage events to PostHog Inc. (USA), our analytics provider (processor), so we can see which setup screens help and where people stop. If you tap "Don't share" there, nothing is sent, and nothing leaves your iPhone before you continue. PostHog stores this data in its EU cloud in Frankfurt, Germany. Setup statistics run only on the setup screens and stop for good when setup is finished. Alarms, missions, and the rest of the app never send analytics.

PostHog receives:

Setup events: which setup screen you viewed, whether you moved forward or back, how many seconds you spent on it, the option you picked for each setup question (as a code, for example "four alarms" or "coffee"), whether you entered a name (yes or no only, never the name itself), when you signed, when you left or returned to the app, and when setup was finished.
A random analytics ID that Waker creates on your iPhone. It is not Apple's advertising identifier or identifier for vendor, and it is not shared with Superwall.
Device and app information, such as device model, iOS version, app version, app language, region, time zone, screen size, and network type.

PostHog does not store your IP address or work out your location from it, and no profile about you is created. We never send PostHog your name, your signature, camera data, wake-up times, mission results, or purchase details (PostHog only sees that you moved past the subscription screen).

Purchases through Apple

Apple processes your purchase and payment through the App Store under Apple's own terms and privacy policy (apple.com/legal/privacy). We never see your payment details.

Why we use this data (legal bases)

To provide Waker — the app, your subscription, purchases and restores, and the personalization you ask for by answering setup questions: performance of our contract with you (Art. 6(1)(b) GDPR).
To measure subscription screens and keep the service secure: our legitimate interest in understanding which screens work and in preventing misuse (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). You can object at any time.
To improve setup with setup statistics: our legitimate interest in understanding which setup screens help people and where they stop (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). They are only sent after you have seen the notice on the first setup screen and continued; tap "Don't share" there to refuse.

Your first name is optional; you can skip it. If you enter it, we use it to greet you on the subscription screen through Superwall.

Right to object. You can object at any time to processing based on our legitimate interests (Art. 21 GDPR). For setup statistics, tap "Don't share" on the first setup screen; for anything else, or afterwards, email us and we stop.

How long we keep data

Data on your iPhone stays there until you delete it or the app.
Superwall keeps data only as long as needed for these purposes and then deletes it under its retention rules. You can ask us at any time to have your data deleted.
PostHog keeps setup analytics for up to 12 months and then deletes them.
Apple keeps purchase records under its own policies.

Where data is processed

Superwall and PostHog are the only services Waker shares data with, and both protect it at least as well as this policy describes.

Superwall processes data in the USA. PostHog stores setup analytics in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany); PostHog Inc. is based in the USA. Any transfers to the USA rely on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or another transfer mechanism permitted under the GDPR, such as the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework where the recipient is certified.

Your rights

You have the right to access your data, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to object to its processing — in particular processing based on our legitimate interests. To use these rights, email us. Because Waker has no accounts, we may need a few details to find the data that belongs to you. Setup statistics are not linked to your name or an account, so we may not be able to tell which events are yours.

You can also complain to a data-protection supervisory authority — in Germany, for example, the authority of your federal state; in Austria, the Datenschutzbehörde.

Permissions we ask for and why

Alarms (AlarmKit): to schedule and ring your wake-up alarms, including the backup alarms that ring again until your morning mission is done.
Notifications: for backup reminders if you keep skipping the mission.
Camera: to run the wake-up mission — counting push-ups and squats, timing a plank hold, recognizing the household object you were sent to find, or checking visible brushing-like motion at your mouth. On-device only, as above.

You can revoke any of these in iOS Settings at any time; the app tells you what stops working.

Children

Waker is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 16 (under 14 in Austria). If you believe a child entered their name, email us and we will have it deleted.

Changes

If this policy changes materially, we update the date above and publish the new version at the same URL before it takes effect.
